The mere exposure effect with emotionally valenced stimuli: Analytic and nonanalytic processing

چکیده
In a directed forgetting task, midway through presentation of the list, participants are instructed to forget the first half of the list and to remember the second half of the list. Memory is tested for both to-beforgotten (TBF) and to-be-remembered (TBR) words. Typically, participants recall TBR more often than TBF words, although they remember just as many TBF as TBR words on recognition tests. Such a directed forgetting effect is interpreted in terms of retrieval inhibition, which refers to temporary inaccessibility of learned materials with leaving their availability unaffected. To investigate whether retrieval inhibition emerges using emotionally neutral and negative words, the directed forgetting task was used. Consistent with the previous studies, I obtained the typical directed forgetting effect irrespective of the type of word. However, I found that the effect was disappeared by a concurrent memory load (i. e., six digits) during the presentation of second list. In addition, there were no differences in recognition tests. These results suggest that learning the second list is critical to the directed forgetting effect for the affective valence of the word stimuli.

Implicit/explicit memory versus analytic/nonanalytic processing: rethinking the mere exposure effect.
In studies of the mere exposure effect, rapid presentation of items can increase liking without accurate recognition. The effect on liking has been explained as a misattribution of fluency caused by prior presentation. However, fluency is also a source of feelings of familiarity. It is, therefore, surprising that prior experience can enhance liking without also causing familiarity-based recogni...
متن کاملEmotional responses to pleasant and unpleasant olfactory, visual, and auditory stimuli: a positron emission tomography study.
Neural correlates of responses to emotionally valenced olfactory, visual, and auditory stimuli were examined using positron emission tomography. Twelve volunteers were scanned using the water bolus method. For each sensory modality, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during presentation of both pleasant and unpleasant stimuli was compared with that measured during presentation of neutral stimu...
متن کاملEarly sensory-perceptual processing deficits for affectively valenced inputs are more pronounced in schizophrenia patients with a history of violence than in their non-violent peers.
Individuals with schizophrenia are more prone to violent behaviors than the general population. It is increasingly recognized that processing of emotionally valenced stimuli is impaired in schizophrenia, a deficit that may play a role in aggressive behavior. Our goal was to establish whether patients with a history of violence would show more severe deficits in processing emotionally valenced i...
متن کاملTest of a potential link between analytic and nonanalytic category learning and automatic, effortful processing.
The link between automatic and effortful processing and nonanalytic and analytic category learning was evaluated in a sample of 29 college undergraduates using declarative memory, semantic category search, and pseudoword categorization tasks. Automatic and effortful processing measures were hypothesized to be associated with nonanalytic and analytic categorization, respectively. Results suggest...
متن کاملWhat makes an art expert? Emotion and evaluation in art appreciation.
Why do some people like negative, or even disgusting and provocative artworks? Art expertise, believed to influence the interplay among cognitive and emotional processing underlying aesthetic experience, could be the answer. We studied how art expertise modulates the effect of positive-and negative-valenced artworks on aesthetic and emotional responses, measured with self-reports and facial ele...
